Captured on an Indonesian night time dive with a Nikon D800E, this outstanding picture reveals a tiny universe of undersea life

Within the pitch-black waters above Indonesia’s Lembeh Strait, photographer Massimo Giorgetta encountered one thing fairly unbelievable. A tunicate salp – a clear, barrel-shaped marine animal barely 5 centimeters throughout – had turn into a floating sanctuary for a unprecedented array of marine life.

Protected Lives was captured on 14 April 2023, throughout what divers name a blackwater dive. Not like conventional night time dives performed on reefs, this tougher strategy takes you miles offshore into open ocean, suspended over deep water in full darkness.
